Description
Two year course
at North Hanover Street Campus
The course provides knowledge and understanding of architectural conservation - along with practical conservation craftskills - to save buildings from decay, damage and demolition. The course is taught through lectures, seminars and tutorials along with field trips and site visits.
Subjects studied in the first year include:
- Introductory Practical Skills in Stonemasonry, Plasterwork, Roofing
- Influences on the Development of Scottish Architecture
- Principles of Architectural Conservation
- Factors Affecting Building Decay
- Surveying Historic Buildings
- Mathematics for Construction
- Building Maintenance Management
- CAD 2D1
The second year expands on the practical craft skills covered in first year and also includes:
- Conservation Technology
- Contract Procurement and Documentation
- Building Services in Large Buildings
- Architectural CAD
- Technical Communication Skills

Career
Local Authorities, Architectural / Surveying Practices, Conservation Organisations, Contractors, Central Government Bodies (National Trust for Scotland, Civic Trusts, Historic Scotland).
Study
Successful students may wish to progress to a relevant degree courses at university which may include BSc (Hons) Building Surveying at Glasgow Caledonian University, BSc (Hons) Building Conservation at Swansea Metropolitan University or BSc Building Surveying at Napier University.
Entry Requirements
(a) One Higher Grade pass or an appropriate grouping of National Qualification units.
OR
(b) One Higher plus 3 Standard Grade passes
OR
(c) Personal experience.
Apply Information
Fill in an application form and return it as soon as possible to the College’s Student Services Section. Your application will be acknowledged within ten working days of receipt.
It is important that you complete the application form as accurately and clearly as possible. You may also wish to include additional information to support your application.
Your completed application form will be passed to a course tutor who will consider your application and you may be asked to attend an interview.
If you are successful you will be made a formal offer of a place. An unconditional offer means that you fulfil all the immediate course entry requirements and have been accepted. A conditional offer means that you must obtain certain qualifications or examination grades before you are accepted. Guidance on how to accept or decline a place is contained in the offer letter.
If you decide to withdraw your application or if you are accepted on to more than one course, please inform the Student Services Section immediately. This will enable us to offer the places held open for you to other applicants.
Applicants who are unsuccessful will be given the opportunity to consider other options available to them and, if required, to seek advice from Student Services Staff.

Applications are welcomed throughout the year. However, the earlier you apply the better your chance of a place on the course of your choice.

Enrolment
Enrolment dates vary according to course requirements. If you have accepted a definite offer of a place, the Student Services Section will provide you with joining instructions giving details on when to enrol and first day attendance. These are usually sent at the beginning of August.
Induction
During your first few days at the College you will obtain more information on your course of study and the facilities on offer at College. Usually there is a Welcome Event at the beginning of each academic session. Details will be provided with joining instructions.
