Enterprise Activities

Feb 2010

Students and staff at within our School of Communication & Media recently organised a series of activities to help poverty-stricken families in Africa.

ICT students and lecturers raised cash and awareness for South African charity Ikamva Labantu, which builds and runs creches, schools and youth centres. Now, thanks to the help of Met staff and students, Ikamva Labantu – meaning the Future of our Nation – can reach even more vulnerable people. Fundraising got underway at the North Hanover Street Student Union with a ‘killer’ pool tournament and a stall selling handmade novelty underpants for Valentine's Day.

Built Environment student Ryan McGheechan potted his way to glory in the pool tournament and picked up the top prize of £50. A jubilant Ryan said: “I’m delighted. The cash will pay for a night out on the town. My route to the trophy was nerve-wracking stuff but I play a fair bit of snooker so my quality shone through in the end.”

Later this month other fundraising activities will take place around the college, including a raffle, a sale of cards and T-shirts for special occasions, and a triathalon event.
