Life as a student can be hard on your bank account. While at college it’s important that you learn to budget so that you don’t get into financial difficulties. Make sure you access all support available. If you get into difficulties you may be able to apply for additional support through the College Harship Fund.
Some students are entitled to state benefits. If you think that you may be entitled then speak to a Student Advisor.
Depending on your circumstances, while at College you may need to pay for:

Make sure you’ve applied for all funding available to you

Find out if you are entitled to any state benefits

Fill in a council tax exemption form

If you can’t or don’t want to stay at home move into a shared flat

Buy a monthly travel ticket such as First Card or Zone Card

Get a
Young Scot Card- if you are under 25 this card will get you money off travel, shopping and food

If you have a mobile phone, get a pay as you go or a cheap contact

Plan your meals and shop on budget

If you decide to eat out check places that offer deals such as “Two Meals for a Fiver”

Bring your own lunch and juice to college

Open a student bank account
What can I do if I get into difficulties?
At the first sign of trouble please come along to Student Services and speak to a Student Advisor. They will be able to advise you on how you can manage better and may refer you on to organisations such as Money Matters or Citizens Advice Bureau. Don’t forget, you may also be able to apply for Hardship Funds.
